John Ferguson, Board Chair
John Ferguson is a long time member of the Wellington West BIA, and the owner/operator of the Hintonburg Giant Tiger Express at 1085 Wellington St. West. John began his career in retail with Woolco/Woolworth, and has been working with Giant Tiger in Hintonburg since 1988. John is also a longstanding volunteer with the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) and is a skip with the RCMP Curling Club. John is interested in ensuring the vibrancy and attractiveness of Wellington Street West, and is the chair of the BIA’s beautification committee.
Mike Morris, Vice Chair
Mike Morris is a returning member of the Wellington West BIA and a third generation storeowner of Morris Home Hardware located at 1226 Wellington St. West. In addition, Mike owns and operates Sharky’s Scuba Supply, Ottawa’s largest scuba and snorkeling store – also at 1226 Wellington St. West. Mike has made a significant contribution to the community through his longstanding involvement with the Rotary Club, and the Youth Services Bureau.
Randy Kemp, Treasurer
Randall Kemp is a founding member of the Wellington West BIA, and has been a commercial property owner in Wellington West since 1990. Randy has held the position of chair of the WWBIA, and represented the BIA during both the Wellington Street redevelopment process and the Wellington Street and Scott Street Community Design Processes. Randy is interested in the promotion of cycling infrastructure in Ottawa West communities, and is the chair of the BIA’s cycling committee.
Sheena Whitten, Secretary
Sheen Whitten is new to the board of the Wellington West BIA, but has worked in commercial property in the neighbourhood for several years – first with Windmill Development Group and currently as the Leasing and Marketing Coordinator for Huntington Property Group. She has a background in neighborhood activism, working with the Community Development Framework Committee for Somerset West, and currently with the branding committee for a local charity – Christie Lake Kids.
Michel Frojmovic, Member at Large
Michel Frojmovic is a founding member of the Wellington West BIA, and is the director of Acacia Consulting & Research located at 430 Parkdale Ave. Michel also is a founder of Creative Neighbourhoods, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing good planning and design to Ottawa. Michel’s role on the board is to represent the interests of the board members off the main Wellington West strip. He holds a Master of Urban Planning and Bachelor of Arts, from McGill University, and is a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Project Management Institute.
Ian Fraser, Member at Large
Ian Fraser is a two time BIA board member, and is a founder of the original Cyclelogik located at 1111-A Wellington St. West, and is a nationally renowned elite triathlete. He has been actively involved the sporting/coaching community in Ottawa for over 20 years, with a special emphasis on sporting events and athletic communities here in Wellington West. A life-long Ottawa resident, Ian has also contributed to the community as a board member for the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO) non-profit housing corporation. He holds a bachelor of Economics from Carleton University.
Laura Twiss, Member at Large
Laura Twiss is a new member of the Wellington West BIA who has been living and working in the community for close to 30 years. She is the co-owner of Twiss & Weber, located at 1282-C Wellington St. West, one of the pillars of Ottawa women’s fashion community. Laura brings expertise in how to grow and foster strong local business partnerships, how to create effective marketing techniques, as well as an extensive network of connections - both in Wellington West and beyond, to the BIA.
Liliana Piazza, Member at Large
Liliana Piazza is returning to the BIA, and has a long history with the Wellington West neighbourhood. Her father, Vincenzo Piazza, opened the Ottawa Bagelshop and Deli – located at 1321 Wellington St. West - in 1984, and it has been a stronghold in the community ever since. Liliana began working at the shop at age 12, and is currently the general manager. Liliana also brings a wealth of experience to the BIA as an internationally recognized opera singer. She has a B.Mus degree in vocal performance from the University of Toronto and an M.Mus from McGill, and has performed extensively throughout Canada, Europe, and the US.
Sheila Whyte, Member at Large
Sheila Whyte is a long serving member of the BIA board, and is the owner of Thyme & Again Creative Catering, located at 1255 Wellington St. West. Through her work at Thyme & Again, Sheila has collaborated with many businesses and festivals both in the Wellington West neighbourhood, and throughout Ottawa. She is a proponent of cooperation and community spirit within the BIA, and is inspired by the positive growth and change in Wellington West she has seen over the years.
Tricia Spooner, Member at Large
Tricia Spooner has been a board member with the Wellington West BIA for the past two years, and is the chair of the BIA’s marketing committee. She has been a resident of the neighbourhood for more than 10 years, and brings over 20 years’ experience as a professional marketer, investor relations and financial services specialist. Tricia is an active cyclist and a strong proponent of neighbourhood and community.
Summer Baird, Member at Large
Summer Baird is the owner of The Hintonburg Public House, located at 1020 Wellington Street West and owns a rental property on Armstrong Street. She is the founder of The Happening Festival which is a volunteer run arts and culture festival that showcases the art behind the businesses in Wellington West and showcases the local art scene. She is also a proud resident so is always looking to connect with businesses and locals alike to make the neighbourhood a more vibrant place.
