Festival of the Night Sky
Nocturne IX is a free, community-based, family-friendly art show and festival dedicated to the night hosted at Cube Gallery for Thursday and Friday this year.
Too often we cheat the night of darkness by creating light pollution that dims the stars above. Nocturne festival creatively counters that with free lectures, music, sidewalk telescope parties and local businesses all celebrating the night sky.

Lecture and Discussion: 7:30 - 8:30pm
“Are We There Yet….?”

Dr. Peter Watson from the Dept. of Physics at Carleton delivers this years short lecture.
It has been a fantasy for thousands of years that we can use our Technology to move our Society to new Environments outside of Earth. Over the last 20 years we have found the vast numbers of planets that could (in principle) house humanity. There is an awful lot of universe to explore, so are we actually able to think about moving to new worlds? And are we likely to find life when we get there? Or do we just have to fix the mess in our own backyard first?

Movie: 8:30 - 9:30pm
"Juno Mission to Jupiter"
Great video explaining the science of Jupiter and the exciting Juno mission. Features interviews with scientists and engineers working on the probe with interesting computer-generated imagery of the mission.

Sidewalk Star Party : Aprox 9:30 - 11:30pm
After the sun sets a family friendly sidewalk star party will be hosted by Ottawa's branch of RASC the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and PopScope Ottawa. Set up on the sidewalk in front of Cube Gallery and on Julian Ave. featuring telescopes, videos and star viewing courtesy local amateur astronomers and members of RASC.
