The Art of Peter Purdy

The Art of Peter Purdy

Thursday March 15th, 2018
7 pm – 10 pm

Loretta Studios, 131 Lorretta Ave. North

Peter Purdy is a non-traditional Indigenous artist born and raised in Mattawa, Ontario on the outskirts of Algonquin Park. Like many small town artists, he started out doing graffiti. Following this initial period of artistic activism, Peter attended the Ottawa School of Art studying fine art and later, classical hand drawn animation.

Peter has been working in the arts in the National Capital Region for over 25 years. While lately he may be best known as the local organizer for Art Battle, a monthly National live painting competition, he continues to explore current issues and express his heritage through his artwork.

“Primarily, I am a painter. My work is deeply connected with my native heritage, as well as my life in the Ottawa Valley. Lately, I have been feeling a pull back into doing more political work: work that speaks not only of my own story but the stories others and of what it is to be indigenous today.”

Vernissage March 15 from 7 pm to 10 pm.
