Meet author Beth Granger and pick up a signed copy of her new book, Born and Razed: Surviving the Cult was Only Half the Battle.
Born and Razed: Surviving the Cult was Only Half the Battle is a story of recovery from religious abuse, and the road to holding the abusers accountable. Beth is the first baby to be born to staff at Grenville Christian College (GCC), where both her parents are teachers. In 1973, with the school on the verge of bankruptcy, salvation comes in the form of the Mothers—the founders of a Cape Cod-based Benedictine sect called the Community of Jesus. The Mothers believe that repentance is the key to making good things happen. But for them, repentance goes hand in hand with public humiliation. For Beth, this means a barrage of emotional abuse, including constant accusations of gluttony and haughtiness that start when she is five years old. Later in life, once she has broken away from the school’s clutches, she is diagnosed with an eating disorder and complex PTSD. After GCC closes permanently in 2007, Beth joins a group of former students in bringing a class action lawsuit against the school, due to the emotional, physical, and sexual abuse they suffered.
Beth Granger escaped the cult in the guise of an elite private boarding school when she was thirty-one. But she didn’t become a drug-addicted streetwalker or go straight to hell, as her cult leaders predicted. Instead, she earned her Bachelor of Education at Queen’s University, got hired after her first teacher interview, married a police officer, and became mother of two. She also helped spearhead a sixteen-year landmark class action lawsuit against her abusers. Beth resides near Ottawa with her family and her three Cavaliers.
