FIND Fresh Air. Now in the fresh air!
Generations of families have enjoyed year-round outdoor activities thanks to great gear from Wellington West’s expert outfitters. Not only has Fresh Air Experience been keeping our community fit and healthy for 50 years, they’re also contributing to our enjoyment of the frosty weather that makes Ottawa the seventh coldest capital city in the world.
Once again, Fresh Air is an integral part of the Winter Trail along the Sir John A. Macdonald (SJAM) Parkway, supporting the tireless work of “Groomer Dave” Adams to create the best possible conditions along this 16 kilometre, multi-use, crowd-funded pathway that runs along the Ottawa River shoreline from the Canadian War Museum to Westboro Beach.
But more than just a sponsor, Fresh Air is actually on the trail again this year. From a pop-up location near Remic Rapids parking lot, Fresh Air will be renting out cross country skis and fat bikes on weekends throughout the winter.
“This is one of the only places in the city you can rent both adult and kids’ cross-country skis,” explains Patrick Scott, Fresh Air Experience’s Community Outreach Coordinator. “For the 2019 season we are trying to animate the trail a little bit more and make Remic Rapids a real gathering place. There are already washrooms, parking and John Ceprano’s famous rock sculptures which make it a hub in other seasons. This year, we’re adding outdoor furniture and a fire pit which we’ll operate on weekends, much like the rest areas along the Rideau Canal Skateway.”
On January 20, Fresh Air will also be co-sponsoring the second annual SJAM cross-country ski festival in conjunction with the Norwegian Embassy, Specialized Bicycles of Canada, Fischer Sports and Salomon. Events include low-key adult and kid cross-country ski races and fat bike races as well as demo gear to try out and free rentals that day. The Norwegian Embassy will bring refreshments and giant skis for all to enjoy.
“Sports like fat biking and cross-country skiing are very enjoyable and accessible to many,” notes Patrick. “Having this fantastic SJAM trail right in the heart of the city makes it easier for everyone to embrace winter. As we like to say, there’s no better time to get outdoors and soak up some sunshine and fresh air.”
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, yes! The Wellington West BIA is also a proud sponsor of the Remic Rapids sector of the trail. Look for our signs, and maybe even our Executive Director, out on the trail.
