FIND where local heroes chow down
Lots of restaurants feature hockey sticks, sports jerseys, bobbleheads, and other memorabilia hanging on the wall. But while The Wellington Diner, does indeed have a lot of that stuff – including dozens of bobbleheads behind the bar – if you hang out here often enough, you just might find yourself sitting right next to a real Ottawa 67, a Fury, or an Ottawa Senator (the sports kind).
Turns out, professional athletes refuel at The Diner a lot. On a recent visit, we were seated next to three very large Ottawa REDBLACKs tackling some very generous plates of delicious Diner fare.
Why? Hard to say. Maybe it’s those athlete-sized portions, the signed photos on the wall, or the super-fan owner. Or maybe it’s the quirky menu items named for Ottawa athletes, like the “6 Shooter Hash” in honour of Ottawa Senators’ defenceman Chris Wideman, or the “Hotsam Batcho Scrambled Egg Hash #72” named for teammate Thomas Chabot. And not to be overlooked is the wildly popular Stoner Burger celebrating the Sens’ alternate captain (and proud Wellington West resident) Mark Stone.
Speaking of Mark Stone, he loves the Wellington Diner so much that he chose to highlight it in last season’s Hometown Hockey ‘On the Road with Mark Stone’ on Sportsnet – noting that it’s where he enjoyed ‘the best waffle he’s ever had’. The segment concludes with Mark and TV host Jennifer Botterill enjoying a feast of Stoner burgers.
But there’s more than burgers and all-day breakfast on the diner’s vast menu – it’s packed with options for just about every taste. Healthy items abound, such as the very popular runners wrap featuring scrambled egg, spinach, tomato, avocado and chipotle cream cheese, along with a side salad.
