FIND two Newfoundlanders who walked into a bar
It’s all about family values, generous spirit, and sense of ‘down-home’ hospitality at Petit Bill’s Bistro on Wellington Street West at Smirle Avenue. For owners brothers Terry and Randy Fitzpatrick, those are the secrets to their 10+ years of success, as well as core values that shaped these brothers and their numerous siblings. That’s why they chose to honour their heritage by naming their restaurant for their late, beloved father, who was given the moniker “Little Bill” upon his arrival at a Newfoundland orphanage.
Also true to their heritage? Making guests feel welcome, something that seems second nature to the Fitzpatricks, whose restaurant is as comfortable as it is comforting.
As for the food, you don’t have to look far to find the Newfoundland influences on the bistro-inspired menu. Fish + frites and ‘Duck Newfit’ (duck confit with partridgeberry gastrique) are but two examples. Not to be missed is one of their Traditional Newfoundland Suppers. That’s your chance to sample classic dishes from The Rock, in a lively kitchen party atmosphere complete with fiddlers.
As you might expect from two gregarious Newfoundlanders, beverages are no afterthought at this restaurant which boasts an award-winning, Ontario-focused wine list. Sommelier (and Algonquin College instructor) Randy also curates winemakers’ dinners plus fun bourbon and scotch tasting events, often held as fundraisers for local causes.
While their continued success is truly no joke, you can certainly expect to enjoy tasty fare with a side helping of laughter anytime you encounter the genial brothers Fitzpatrick at Petit Bill’s Bistro.
