FIND unicorns, llamas and sew many cats
It’s not just the eclectic fabric selection that has made Hintonburg’s friendly sewing store a destination shop for aspiring and experienced sewists from all across the region. Perhaps the biggest drawing card of all at Fabrications is the supportive, welcoming environment.
“We believe quite passionately that everyone is creative,” says Faustina Konkal, who co-owns the store with her mother, Catherine Fournier. “We love nothing better than helping people discover their inner creative genius and fuel their passion with supplies for their first, second or hundredth project.”
As appealing as the fabric and pattern selections are, it’s the classes that really set Fabrications apart. “We are proud to be growing a grassroots maker community here,” adds Faustina. “Whether you’re an absolute beginner or someone with sewing experience looking to up your game, we have a wide range of classes for all abilities and interests.”
Students of all ages and genders eagerly sign up to learn how to make market totes, throw pillows, pants, yoga bags, shirts and much more, thanks to Fabrication’s large collection of quality sewing patterns for all shapes and sizes, created by amazing independent pattern designers.
Faustina notes that you don’t have to own a sewing machine to get in on the fun as the shop offers regular sewing date nights; for a nominal fee, you can come in with a friend and work on your own projects in their studio. Similarly, whenever classes are not running, you can rent sewing machine time by the hour. Sergers are available too; take a serger basics class and you’ll get 10 prepaid rental hours.
“Whether you pick up fabric and a pattern to work on at home or participate in one of our classes, we love that what you end up with is not only a useful item but also a fantastic sense of accomplishment.”
