5:30pm:
Jazz from Everywhere
Hintonburg singer-songwriter
Next week’s group of Ottawa musicians calls itself Le jazz de partout dans le monde, or simply, Jazz from Everywhere. They play lively, rhythmic, dance-able tunes in the great tradition of jazz. On bass we have Neil Sealy, originally from Barbados, who worked for many years a few blocks from here at the Civic Hospital, and who has played with some of Ottawa’s finest musicians.
On drums we have André Ferraton, an accomplished rhythm provider who plays rock and R&B in addition to jazz. On trumpet there is the much-in-demand Ron Ferguson, who provides evocative melodies for both big bands and small ensembles. Singing will be Michele Castonguay—who also works nearby at the Civic Hospital—who has performed at clubs and jam sessions in Ottawa for years. She gives a new twist to beloved and classic tunes by the likes of George Gershwin and Cole Porter. Samantha Christ François arrived here not too long ago from Haïti, and sings beautifully in her native Creole, as well as French, Portuguese, Spanish, and English. The convenor of the group, and its pianist, is Karl Nerenberg, a longtime resident of this neighbourhood.
Karl is the convenor of the group, and has lived in the Wellington West area since 1989 after moving here from Montreal to take on the job of executive producer of the CBC TV show On The Road Again, which was produced out of the CBC facility on Lanark Ave.
7:00pm:
Gerri Trimble
Hintonburg jazz vocalist
Jazz vocalist Gerri Trimble is a regular performer at venues in Ottawa and beyond, delivering ear-catching tunes with a personal bent. With a voice that hints at blues and country, Gerri brings a deep love for the art of singing to her performances, along with her senses of humour, adventure and a “connoisseur’s knack for picking fine tunes” (Ottawa Citizen). Expect a playful selection of jazz songs, swing, blues, ballads and more.
Gerri has been a resident of Hintonburg for more than 15 years.
